Citrulline là một axit amin không thiết yếu, có nhiều trong dưa hấu, dưa chuột, bí ngô, ... có thể giúp tăng tổng hợp protein và giúp giảm sự hấp thu một số loại amino acid tại gan và ngăn cản chúng bị phân giải, do vậy Citrulline sẽ hỗ trợ cho việc duy trì và gia tăng khối lượng cơ bắp. Citrulline có khả năng làm tăng sự giãn mạch do vậy có thể làm hạ huyết áp và tăng lưu thông máu.
Citrulline là chất trung gian quan trọng tham gia vào quá trình tuần hoàn urê, một quá trình giải phóng cơ thể khỏi các hợp chất có hại.
